Experience won out over youthful exuberance in the highly anticipated annual St Joseph’s College Staff vs Year 12 footy match on the Mike Biddulph Oval on Friday.
In front of a capacity crowd of hot-dog munching footy fans, the well-oiled Staff team overran the ramshackle Year 12 outfit four or five goals and a few points (30) to not many scoring shots (6).
Inspired by their young spiritual leader, Mr Mola, who braved the field on one leg, just to keep things fair, the Staff outfit were in early form, with the likes of right-wing specialist Mrs Hines and mid-field superstars Mrs Trichilo and Mrs Coutts, showing deft touch with a few slick possessions.
The Year 12s resisted the initial forward blitzkrieg of the likes of seasoned campaigner Mr Ruck, Mr Lemmes, Mr Picard and Mr Bransby. The valiant efforts of brick-wall full-back Brad and his bevy of half-back helpers including Emily, Emma, Ella, Jasmine, Chantelle, Kadee and Keira did their best to resist the Staff’s forward onslaught.
As the match progressed, the enthralling midfield duel between dynamo Imojen and Mr Callaghan was occasionally interrupted by the evasive Harper and lightning-quick Judson who took turns splitting packs and exposing the lack of pace that besets most staff members sooner or later.
One of the highlights of the day was the inadvertent kick-to-kick enjoyed by father and son (teacher and student) Mr O’Donnell and Harper, who were often on the receiving end of each other’s kicks.
The duelling Veerappans were also on the field, with Mr Veerappan pleased to watch son, Darshan, get a very practical lesson in the effects of gravity as a result of some “gentle” tackles. The presence of these parent/student opponents on the field brought an added sense of competition to the match.
After watching the mid-field exploits of Mr Mola, the Year 12s produced their own one-legged wunderkind later in the game, with Gabriel taking to the field to hop about and demand he be spared from sticking to the rules.
This somehow won favour with the men in green, Isaiah and Davey, who awarded him best on field for the Year 12s. Mr Lemmes’ gallant work on the far wing earned him the chocolates for the victorious Staff team.
The lunchtime game was part of the annual Footy Colours Day that brings together the Junior, Middle and Senior schools to celebrate their love of footy, while commencing fair well festivities for the outgoing Year 12s.
There was a huge display of St Joseph's support for our Year 6s at the North Road soccer fields on Saturday. Whilst our team came runner-up to Bethel (final score 3:1), we were the winners when it came to school community spirit and comraderie. Thank you to coach Guy Lembo and all the parents who have supported the children - not just this season but from when it all started in Pre-Primary.
Congratulations to the Year 10 students team on winning the Grand Final of the Albany Volleyball Associations Junior League! The team have played hard all season in an almost undefeated season with only 2 losses! All under the amazing coaching of Indi Marshall. Well done Ladies and Lads, very much deserved!
During week eight on the 7th of September, the Outdoor Recreation and Sports Coaching Certificate (years 10-12) students undertook an excursion to Emu Point Beach for stand-up paddle boarding, and Castle Sky Walk in the Porongurups. The day was filled with laughter, sunshine, falling into the channel and a whole heap of exercise. As we climbed up Castle Rock the students got to take a step back from learning environments and shine their leadership skills by gazing upon the Great Southern and surroundings from above.
A big Thank-You to Mr Goodhew, (Hoodoo Guru) Mr Bransby and Mr Ruck for organising and coordinating this excursion to be possible.
Congratulations to the Year 11 students in the Saints Volleyball team who made it through to the Grand final of the Albany Volleyball Associations mixed Competitive division. The team have been training hard all season and were rewarded for all the early morning training sessions and Wednesday night games with a grand final opportunity. While they didn't produce their best game and went down to the 'Five foot committee' side, they can take credit for a fantastic season. Thanks to the parents and staff supporting the team throughout the season.
Over the past four weeks the Pre-Primary children have taken turns visiting the clients at the Clarence Estate Day Centre, just around the corner from St Joseph's College. The Tuesday afternoon intergenerational visits were full of painting, playdough, volcano building, reading, dress-ups and colouring. The Pre-Primary children bravely initiated conversation and play with the elderly clients. They displayed care, compassion and kindness, representing the College proudly. The visits bought immeasurable joy to both the Clarence clients and the Pre-Primary children. Special connections were formed, and precious memories made. Well done Pre-Primary and thank you for showing the Spirit of Jesus in our community!
In Pre-Primary, we are learning to co-operate and communicate our ideas to work towards a shared goal.
We worked together to build a bridge over the river, so our little person could make it to the other side.
We practiced problem solving and creative investigation, while working in a team and sharing thoughts.
We discovered that sometimes combining our thoughts helps us get an even better idea, and that practice makes progress!
We again have more programs happening in the near future.

A wop bop a lu mop a wop bam boom! ‘Grease is the Word’ for ALOTCo in 2023!
If you've loved Grease since you first saw it on the big screen or fell in love with one of the stage revivals ... Throw your mittens around your kittens and away we go ….
It's 1959 and Rydell High Seniors are in fine form - the too-cool-for-school Pink Ladies and T-Birds rule.
At times crass, tough, vulnerable, lusty, and romantic, Grease the musical follows ten working class teens as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, personal values and love. It's not all about Sandy and Danny. The focus of this production will be developing a strong ensemble performance that takes the audience back to gritty roots of Grease before the highly polished, but beloved film version.
