As an introduction to this term's Design and Technologies unit covering Materials and technologies specialisations, the Year Five students had a newspaper fashion parade.
We thought this was a fun idea and we would get to work with our friends, but Mrs Cav had another idea. She gave us all a coloured number between 1 and 3 and we had to work with whoever had the same coloured number. Some of us were not very happy because we wanted to work with our friends. One person in each group was to be the model and the other two dressed them up. We drew our designs and tried to make them with the newspaper. Some turned out the same but others were different. It was mostly the boys that wanted to model the outfits and they were so funny. We had a catwalk that everyone walked down and posed for a photo. Everyone had a great time with lots of laughing, and even though we were not happy at the beginning about being put into groups, we all had a really great time with other people we wouldn't normally work with. Thanks, Mr Collins and Mrs Cav for a fun lesson.

Term Two was a busy time for our year group. Those of us who were not studying for our first ATAR exams were on work placement for two weeks if they are undertaking the general pathway at the College, and the Human Biology class had a big move to an online format through ViSN. Many of our peers would consider their first ATAR exams to be a success, and we have endeavored to remember that ATAR is a big jump from Year Ten. However, our cohort has done amazingly well in achieving the marks they did. The general pathway students, while the ATAR student were studying for and completing their exams, were on work placement at various facilities around Albany. They gained valuable experience in a place of work the majority of them had an interest in. Each came back knowing more about what was in store for them when they were older. The Human Biology class move to ViSN was an interesting adjustment halfway through the year, but they are continuing well with their work and had a well-deserved break over the holidays.

Semester One was so long and full of many things. We went through five semester tests. They were challenging and pushed us to our best results possible, but we made it! It’s already halfway through this year and we have done so much as a year group. We learnt and did so many different things in our classes last semester. In Mr Probert’s English class, we started a class novel called The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas and are around one quarter of the way through. In science with Mr Lemmes, Mr Veerappan and Mrs Mielens we learnt about the different systems of the body, how they work and the effects they have on the body. To learn more about these systems we did dissections to understand the way these systems work. In HASS with Mr Cole, we started Law, Government and Democracy. During Maths with Mr Ruck and Mr Rutherford we covered algebra and algebraic equations. In Religious Education with Mr Habal and Mr Murray we focused on Mary and the Rosary. We did a lot last term and are ready to go for the coming semester.

Feast Day: August 8
Patron Saint of: Australia
Life:
Born in Melbourne in 1842 to parents from Scotland, Mary grew up in a family that faced constant financial struggles. Feeling called to religious life, she met Father Julian Woods in 1860 and together founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Josephite Sisters. Mary's Order worked to staff schools especially for poor children, as well as orphanages and to do other works of charity. She died in 1909 and was canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. Mary is currently Australia's only Saint.
Prayer:
God of compassion, God of all people, we praise you for your servant, Mary Mackillop, who gave her life to serve you in the poor and oppressed. As she is honoured in our world, may we continue to learn to share her vision. Help us to recognise, as she did, that the poor of our time will hear the gospel in the way we serve them. Be with us as we strive to follow her and carry out our mission of service and care. St Mary Mackillop, pray for us.
With the skies darkening over winter, Year Five and Six students have been busy creating some beautiful murals to decorate our college and remind us of some important messages. Under the themes of Making Jesus Real, Catholic Earthcare and The Naidoc week theme 'Be Brave,' four murals will be mounted around the Matteau precinct for the benefit of all.
A huge thank you must go to the students for their design and creative work, Mrs Hines, Mrs Thomas, Mrs Wright, Miss Della Bosca and Mrs Gilbert for supporting the students to complete this project. Thanks to Mr West and Mr Gough for mounting the murals.
Please come and enjoy viewing the murals in term 3
