The Indigenous Middle and Senior School students had the opportunity to go on a guided walking tour on Coorndarup (Mt Clarence) with Larry from Kurrah Mia. Student heard about the Menang heritage, cultural traditions and beliefs. We also learnt about local bush foods and animals from the area.
..." we had an amazing time learning about Mt Clarence (place of shelter). Larry, our Indigenous guide, taught us the stories of Lake Seppings, the Stirling Ranges and the Porongurups. We all had a lovely time learning about the land that we are living on today. Larry explained which plants were medicinal, those that could be eaten and those that couldn't. We learnt about many different species that live on Mt Clarence that we never see..." (Imojen)
Last week, the Year Eights visited the Junior School to read their creation stories to some Junior School buddies. After learning about different creation stories from the Bible in our Religious Education studies, the Year Eights wrote and illustrated a chosen creation story as a children's book. Once the books were finished they were ready to have an audience. The Year Eights read to buddies from Year Three, Four and Five over consecutive mornings. Sometimes we had a little extra time and the students were able to play games together. A big thank you to all Year Eights for their hard work and our buddy classes for listening so attentively.

Our Year Nine cohort have had the opportunity to engage with some unique learning experiences as part of the Federally Funded Year 9 Career Taster Program this semester. The program is designed to encourage and support young people to become '‘career curious’ and extend their thinking through practical activities and meaningful experiences with the world of work, allowing them to learn about different industries, and current and emerging occupations and career pathway.
In partnership with South Regional TAFE and CEWA, we have been able to offer our Year Nine students the opportunity to explore future careers through Mindflight7 and Pro Drones Solutions.
Last term, all our Year Nines had the opportunity to explore a range of careers through a Virtual Workspace with Mindflight7. The Mindflight7 virtual reality experience is focused on genuine learning opportunities, realistic career guidance across Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics subjects (STEAM) and highly engaging vocational training experiences. Students took their hand to dissecting frogs, performing open heart surgery and operating forklifts. By all accounts, the students loved this learning experience and were awakened to the many opportunities that are available to them in the future.
This week some of our Year 9 took to the skies with Mr. Brad Harkup from Pro Drone Solutions to get a first-hand look at what a future workplace could look like during an exciting incursion.
The students were given the opportunity to fly commercial-grade drones over the school and not only get a bird’s eye view of the school’s buildings through on-board cameras, but undertook a 3D scan of the oval, and thermal imaging to locate a few “missing” students.
During the session, Mr Harkup demonstrated to students that drones were not just for taking “pretty pictures” but were used for a wide-range of commercial applications including detailed surveying, thermal imaging and inspection of hard-to-access areas for anything from wildlife to solar panels. The drones were also used for gas detection and have the same methane sensors that are being used on the Mars Rover Missions, something that could come in handy in the classroom too!
The students were amazed at being able to read the temperature of the school’s solar panels on the gymnasium roof, noting that a Fremantle Dockers football was also stuck up there, “right where it belonged”.
The students thanked Mr Harkup for visiting the school for the incursion, but were a little reluctant to hand back the controls.
Later in the term we have one more opportunity for our Year Nine students. SALT (Supporting and Linking Women in Trades) and SRTAFE Trade Training Hub, will be working with our students to engage them in more experiences to engage them in the many opportunities available to them in the future.
I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs. Andrea Gallagher from SRTAFE who continues to liaise with us to make us aware of the opportunities on offer for our students. The partnership we continue to grow is providing students experiences we may not have been able to offer, without theirs and CEWA's ongoing support.

One of the great days on the St Joseph's sporting calendar is the running of the St Joseph's Cup. The Year Six horses and Year One jockeys combine to compete for this prized cup. The action will take place on Tuesday 1 November at 12.00pm on the Cunningham lawn.
A fancy hat parade will also be held, and children are encouraged to make a simple hat at home for the parade. Parents are most welcome, See you there!
Last Friday the college held its annual Junior School Inter-house Athletics Carnival which all students spent the day on the oval competing in fun and challenging track, field and novelty events.
The day commenced with our Year Four, Five and Six students running in a tough 800m track event, while the Year One, Two and Three students warmed themselves up with some competitive roller ball. After a couple of light showers, all students partook of their field events and recorded some impressive throws and jumps. While the Year One and Two students were busy with Tug of War, House dodge ball, tunnel ball and a skipping relay.
The Pre Primary and Kindergarten students joined us just before lunch for the main event of the day, the Early Learning 50m sprints! All students ran with great effort and were cheered on by the crowd.
The rest of the afternoon had students compete in the 100m, 200m and 400m races, with the day finishing with some fun novelties and the 4 x 100m relays.
In a close contest, De Vialar led by Emily and Ziv took out bragging rights, claiming their second House competition for the year. Cunningham came a close second, followed by Ozanam and McCormack.
