Second Sunday of Lent – The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. “Glimpse of hope and future glory.”
We have made it to the middle of Term One. What a great way to arrive at this point with some healthy competition and enthusiastic participation at the Inter-House Swimming Carnivals for both Secondary and Junior School students. Thank you to all the staff and parents involved, especially to the coordinators, Mr Paul O’Donnell and Mr Zak Mola. Students who attended will be treated to an icy pole.
Our Senior students in Year Eleven and Twelve attended the annual University Roadshow last Thursday where representatives from each of the WA universities presented valuable information about courses and post-secondary schooling options.
Next week our Year Sevens head to the Stirling Ranges for their much-anticipated camp. We wish them well, especially strong legs and lungs as they tackle Bluff Knoll. We look forward to hearing about their adventures.
I am very proud of the way students conduct themselves in public, particularly since they are so easily identifiable when wearing the St Joseph’s College uniform. On the rare occasion members of the public witness less than becoming behaviour, when I find out about it, I am disappointed. Please remember that you not only represent the College but also your families.
Thank you to the families who have already donated to the P&F Easter Raffle. Donations can be dropped off to classrooms and the front office.
I hope you all enjoy the Labour Day holiday.
St Joseph – Pray for Us.

First Sunday of Lent – “One does not live by bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”
We celebrated our first Mass in Holy Family Church this year as a College, albeit separately as sub-schools so that we could fit. Fr Joel, however, took the opportunity to beautifully lead the Ash Wednesday Mass to the Junior School students through his homily, and then at the Secondary School Mass, he altered it to connect with the older students. Thank you to Mrs Palfrey for coordinating both Masses.
The College Ball took place on Saturday for our Year Eleven and Twelve students at the Retravision Stadium. The function room was transformed into The Secret Garden with fairy lights, bowers and carpets of greenery and floral arrangements. The food was plentiful and beautifully presented. But the standout of the night were our Senior students. Their dazzling appearance was only matched by their splendid conduct, which includes their moves on the dance floor. Thank you to Mr Callaghan, Mr Landells, the Ball Committee, parents and staff.
The cancellation of the Inter-House Swimming Carnivals last year, means we are ready to make a splash this week. Tuesday is the Secondary Carnival and on Wednesday the Year Four to Six. Thank you to Mr O’Donnell and Mr Mola, respectively, for organising. We are aiming for maximum participation and fun at ALAC.
I wish you all a good week.
St Joseph – Pray for Us.

Although their was a lot of nervous energy in the morning, students got into the spirt of the day and competed with great enthusiasm and energy. The carnival was closely contested amongst all houses, with the house groups swapping ranking frequently throughout the day.

For Project Compassion this week we hear Laxmi's story.
After losing her father at a young age, Laxmi was at risk of falling further into extreme poverty in Nepal. Through the support of Caritas, Laxmi joined a child's club, became a leader in her school and is now a mentor to other girls in her village. You can find her story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqA8Q_KuAb8
"Tapitas" will continue this Wednesday at lunchtime where students can donate any spare change they may have and can display their name on our "running water" collage to showcase our commitment to this worthy cause.
Please donate where you can to the class/ homeroom boxes! The College thanks you for your ongoing and very generous support this Lenten season.

Feast Day: February 27
Patron Saint of: Students and young people
Life:
Born in 1838 to a large Italian family, Gabriel was a popular and cheerful young man whose spirit of prayer, love for the poor and consideration for others made a deep impression on everyone he met. He was an example for young and old and was made a Saint in 1920.
Prayer:
O Saint Gabriel, we wish, like you, to grow in love for God. Remember us in our trials, especially those who are young. Support us by your prayers all our days. And when this life is done may we join you in heaven in the company of Jesus and Mary. Amen. St Gabriel, Pray for us.

On Friday the Year Nine Outdoor Education students displayed the camp cooking skills they have been learning by undertaking the Camp Masterchef challenge. They prepared a two-course meal on a Trangia compact cooking stove. A wide variety of meals were prepared including burgers, chicken tenders, pasta carbonara, meatballs and pasta as well as desserts such as smores, chocolate fondue and French toast.
After much deliberation the Camp Masterchef challenge winner was Riley Wood with his grilled haloumi and mango salsa salad combined with instant paella. A very worthy winner!
The Outdoor Education class will now turn their focus to canoeing in preparation for their camp in Walpole next term.

The team for the upcoming ACC swimming carnival in Perth and Great Southern Inter-School carnival in Albany will be announced shortly. Thanks to the parent supporters and spectators and to the staff and student assistants on the day.
Natale, Tyler, and Kenneth represented Albany Raiders in Perth, in the Under 16s Country Championships Basketball Tournament in the Championship division. Their team went through the whole tournament undefeated, taking out the Grand Final by three points over Geraldton. So much hard work went into their preparation, and it was so well deserved!

Students will be competing in a variety of traditional swimming and novelty events gaining points towards the overall house shields. Students have nominated for their events during PE lessons and house meetings. Parents and spectators are welcome to attend to support the swimmers. Racing begins at 9.30am and concludes by 2.30pm
Today Mrs Loveridge's reading group ended our session with "Tricky Word Racing". This activity provides students with an opportunity to revise all the tricky words they have learned to date. They record the time it takes to say all of the words and hope to beat their time next time we do the activity.
Everyone really enjoyed the game and Mrs Loveridge was really impressed that everyone chose to 'give it a go'. Mrs Lister joined us for this game too and was impressed to hear how well everyone did.
It is wonderful to visit the Year One and Two classes during literacy time and see our students engaged in many different types of learning experiences. Today there was handwriting, high-frequency word games, mat sessions, guided reading, phonics on the iPad and creative writing. Keep up the fantastic work Year One and Two!
