On Tuesday evening 30th May 2023, 50 parents and students gathered together in the Junior School Undercover area and the De Viliar Home Economics room to complete some Communion type activities. This allowed parents and students to spend some toggether and have some fun. In the Home Economics room flour and sticky hands were present as delicious pitta bread emerged from mixing bowls - tasted great too. In the Undercover area students chose a Communion symbol and transfered and created a banner as a reminder of their upcoming First Communion. A big thank you to everyone who assisted to make the evening enjoyable for parents and students, there were certainly lots of smiles on faces. We are now awaiting eagerly the Communion Reflection day this Thursday June 8th and the day when all these students will make their First Communion, Sunday the 11th June.

Feast Day: May 30
Patron Saint of: France & The Military
Life:
Born in Paris in 1412, Joan led French troops against the English during the Hundred Years War. After she was captured by the English, Joan was put on trial and accused of being a witch, burnt alive at the stake in . In 1431 she was burned alive at the stake. Joan had a great love for the sacraments, which strengthened her compassion toward the poor and has been the subject of many books, plays and movies.
Prayer:
In the face of your enemies, in the face of harassment, ridicule, and doubt,
you held firm in your faith. Even in your abandonment, alone and without friends,
you held firm in your faith. Even as you faced your own mortality, you held firm in your faith.
I pray that I may be as bold in my beliefs as you, St. Joan.
I ask that you ride alongside me in my own battles.
Help me be mindful that what is worthwhile can be won when I persist.
Help me hold firm in my faith. Help me believe in my ability to act well and wisely. Amen.
St Joan of Arc, pray for us.
The Junior School Inter-House Cross-Country carnival set to be held this Friday has been postponed due to staffing issues. The Carnival will now be held on Friday June 2nd. So there's one more week for the little bit of extra training!
Thanks
Mr Jim Morcom
Head of Junior School Year 3-6
Last Tuesday six secondary students travelled to Denmark to contest the Inter-School surfing competition held at Ocean Beach. The lovely surf conditions were enjoyed by all competitors, with some travelling from as far as from Esperance to compete. The St Joseph's College teams had an exceptional day in the surf with Kalgan and Jethro Simmons making the semi-finals of the Junior boys division, Gary Wun and Marlee Mundy-Kemp were runners up in the Senior bodyboarding division and Zephyr Simmons and Storm Pietropaolo were winners of the Senior boys division. Zephyr and Storm now progress through to the zone finals in Perth later this year for a chance to become the State schools champions! Thank you to Davynka Moss for supervising the students at the event.
The St Joseph's 'Saints' were tasked with defending their title at the recent year 7/8 AFL football carnival, held at the Centennial Sporting precinct. The weather was typical of Albany (wet, windy and miserable), however not even a downpour right on the opening siren against Denmark in round 1, could stop the freight train that was the mighty St Joseph's College. They were clinical at center bounces and generated numerous inside 50's, resulting in a commanding win (despite losing their compass and kicking many points). Game two saw a replay of last year's Grand final against NASHS and despite all the play, St Joe's found themselves down by four points with 20 seconds to play after NASHS went coast to coast for a 'sausage roll'. Never fear for Lewis is here, as he bobbed up with a handy mark, before he calmly slotted the sealer moments before the siren.
St Jo's then started to get rolling as they dismantled ASHS and steamrolled GSG, led by the likes of Ambrose, Reef, Regan, Gianni and Cameron who were running riot all over the ground. As we awaited to find out our opponent for the GF, coaches Kenneth and Valentino delved into the archives to find some inspirational quotes before a late substitute meant Kit gave his best John Kennedy impersonation to fire up the troops. Inspired, the boys lifted, and they ran and tackled all over the park to win in emphatic fashion by 6 goals and guide the mighty St Jo's to their first back-to-back title in College history. Well done to all players, all coaches and umpires and it was great to see the College so well represented, packing way above their weight division!!
Mr Ruck.
Last Wednesday the Year 7 and 8 girls AFL team braved the blustery conditions to contest the Inter-School carnival at the Eastern Pavilion grounds. After several gruelling training sessions under the watchful eyes of the student coaches and assistant coaches the team were ready for action.
The first game against back to back Premiers, Denmark, was a challenging opening round match. With the wind strongly favouring one end of the ground the team came home strong in the second half to go down narrowly, but learning plenty.
After a bye round the Saints second match was against a rampaging NASHS unit who were building strongly and were heavily favoured. A pumped up St Joseph's side after Judson led he warm up had different ideas, but were disappointed to fall just one point short on the final siren. Great marking by Charlotte and rebounding by Michelle and Torie nearly got them there.
By the time the game versus ASHS came around the St Joseph's side were really finding their positions and Year Ten student coach, Charlotte Clayton, had worked out how to get the best out of the team. In a dominant display the ball rarely left the St Joseph's forward half regardless of kicking with or against the win for the Saints to take the win.
The team had a wobbly start to their final round robin match against Grammar being slow out of the blocks. After a stirring half time address they came out firing with great play from Michelle, Elsie, Amelia, Eva and Pippa doing their best to keep adding to the score board.
When the finals were announced, the St Joseph's team had a rematch against Grammar in the play off for third and fourth. There was no sleepy start for the Saints this time and they ran away comprehensive winners.
Congratulations to the girls for the skill, effort and determination they showed throughout training and matches. A huge thank you to coach Charlotte Clayton and her assistants Indi, Max and Marlee. Thank you to Davey and Isaiah for sharing the umpiring duties throughout the day and Imojen, Judson and Kit for their support.
BRONZE MEDALLION COURSE
The Royal Life Saving Bronze Medallion is recognised as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. This particular award has a long and proud history – it was the first lifesaving award to be created by the Royal Life Saving Society way back in 1892. Since then, many thousands of lifesavers equipped with the skills and knowledge learnt in the Bronze Medallion have been able to keep themselves or others more safe around water, perform a safe and effective aquatic rescue and even save a life.
ALAC are hosting a two day Bronze Medallion course on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th July, 2023. If you are 16 years of age or above and are interested in becoming an Austswim Instructor, Lifeguard or just wish to increase your knowledge of water safety, the Bronze Medallion qualification is a great place to start.
Please note there is a swim component to the course where you will be required to swim 400m in 13 minutes- a combination of freestyle, side stroke, survival backstroke and breast stroke.
Enrolments or enquiries regarding the course can be directed to Tiffany at ALAC alacswimschool@albany.wa.gov.au The two day course cost is $198.80 (payable on enrolment). This includes registration and subsequent issue of the actual Bronze Medallion on completion and passing of the course.
Our Kindy and Pre-Primary families are invited to STAY and PLAY on the listed dates! This is a great opportunity to spend some special time with your child and socialise with other families in your child's class. Don't forget your keep cup if you would like a cup of tea or coffee.
A reminder that the second First Communion parent and child meeting is to be held this coming Tuesday, May 30th at 6.00pm. We will meet firstly in the Junior School undercover area then split into two groups to work on some hands on activities. We will be making bread (just as Jesus would have eaten at the Last Supper), and make a Communion banner. Hopefully the meeting will not go much over the hour, but it may due to the cooking process. Looking forward to seeing you all then.
