Term 2 - Week 7

Active Citizenship

Whole School
Posted: Monday 17 July 2023

The Year 8’s Civics and Citizenship classes learned about being an Active Citizen this term. They were tasked with choosing a Social Issue of interest and creating a campaign for that issue. We were so fortunate to receive extremely well researched and thoughtful products, however one particularly stood out to the HaSS Department.

Marcey O’Donnell went above and beyond with this in and out of class activity, creating an entire website, along with a QR code (very flash – Marcey!) to bring attention to an issue very close to home – The Woodside Scarborough Gas Project (just off the north coast of WA).

Check out some screen shots of Marcey’s impressive call to action website, and if you would like to support her in this mission, please feel free to follow the link and sign the petition:

Paul Litherland - Cyber Safety Presentations 2023

Whole School
Posted: Friday 9 June 2023

For close to twenty years, Paul Litherland has been working at the coalface of online crime. Since 2008, he has worked specifically with juvenile victims and their families, and has used those experiences to develop highly informative presentations regarding the risks of the online world.

Since leaving the Western Australia Police in 2014, Paul has grown to become one of the nations most recognised and highly awarded educators in the fields of Cyber Safety and Internet Awareness, culminating in him being named the 2022 WA Australian of the Year.

Paul returns to St Joseph's College in person for the first time since 2020, where he will once again deliver presentations to both students and families. Students from Years Five through to Ten will see him during the day, and parents will have the opportunity to see him in the evening. Parents are strongly urged to attend in order to keep informed of cyber threats to the children of our College.

We would love to see a good turn out, as each year's presentation always contains new information to keep pace with the changing pace of the cyber world. Moreover, parents often underappreciate the dangers of the internet for children and presentations such as this help build vigilence in keeping children safe.

Date: Wednesday June 14th

Saint of the Week!

Saint Norbert

Feast Day: June 6

Patron Saint of: Safe delivery of children

Life:

During the 12th century in France, Saint Norbert founded a religious Order known as the Norbertines. His goal was to revitalise many of the faithful who had turned away from God and preaching peace and forgiveness among enemies. He faced many difficulties but knew that with God he could conquer anything. He continued his work until his death on June 6, 1134.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us St. Norbert as an example of holiness. Help us to imitate the love of You he showed when he amended his life and began to seek holiness.

St Norbert, pray for us.

JS IH X-Country 2023

Last Friday saw the Junior School take on the 2023 IH X Country. Students had an early lunch and were welcomed onto the oval with a down pour of rain. Luckily enough, this was to be the last drop of rain for the afternoon as the Pre Primary's kicked us off with tough 500m track. We then progressed through all the year groups to which we saw some fantastic running and some competitive Tug Of War. Ozanam took out bragging rights for the afternoon, led by house leaders James and Amelia. Much to Mrs Palfrey's delight, Ozanam claimed the shield back from the dominate Devialar.

The college would like to congratulate our Champion and Runner Ups from each year group:

  2. Runner Ups: Charlie & Penny

Year 2:

Communicants bake bread just as Jesus ate

On Tuesday evening 30th May 2023, 50 parents and students gathered together in the Junior School Undercover area and the De Viliar Home Economics room to complete some Communion type activities. This allowed parents and students to spend some toggether and have some fun. In the Home Economics room flour and sticky hands were present as delicious pitta bread emerged from mixing bowls - tasted great too. In the Undercover area students chose a Communion symbol and transfered and created a banner as a reminder of their upcoming First Communion. A big thank you to everyone who assisted to make the evening enjoyable for parents and students, there were certainly lots of smiles on faces. We are now awaiting eagerly the Communion Reflection day this Thursday June 8th and the day when all these students will make their First Communion, Sunday the 11th June.

Inter-School surfing

Secondary School
Posted: Thursday 1 June 2023

Last Tuesday six secondary students travelled to Denmark to contest the Inter-School surfing competition held at Ocean Beach. The lovely surf conditions were enjoyed by all competitors, with some travelling from as far as from Esperance to compete. The St Joseph's College teams had an exceptional day in the surf with Kalgan and Jethro Simmons making the semi-finals of the Junior boys division, Gary Wun and Marlee Mundy-Kemp were runners up in the Senior bodyboarding division and Zephyr Simmons and Storm Pietropaolo were winners of the Senior boys division. Zephyr and Storm now progress through to the zone finals in Perth later this year for a chance to become the State schools champions! Thank you to Davynka Moss for supervising the students at the event.

Year 7-8 Girls Football carnival

Secondary School
Posted: Tuesday 30 May 2023

Last Wednesday the Year 7 and 8 girls AFL team braved the blustery conditions to contest the Inter-School carnival at the Eastern Pavilion grounds. After several gruelling training sessions under the watchful eyes of the student coaches and assistant coaches the team were ready for action.

The first game against back to back Premiers, Denmark, was a challenging opening round match. With the wind strongly favouring one end of the ground the team came home strong in the second half to go down narrowly, but learning plenty.

After a bye round the Saints second match was against a rampaging NASHS unit who were building strongly and were heavily favoured. A pumped up St Joseph's side after Judson led he warm up had different ideas, but were disappointed to fall just one point short on the final siren. Great marking by Charlotte and rebounding by Michelle and Torie nearly got them there.

By the time the game versus ASHS came around the St Joseph's side were really finding their positions and Year Ten student coach, Charlotte Clayton, had worked out how to get the best out of the team. In a dominant display the ball rarely left the St Joseph's forward half regardless of kicking with or against the win for the Saints to take the win.

The team had a wobbly start to their final round robin match against Grammar being slow out of the blocks. After a stirring half time address they came out firing with great play from Michelle, Elsie, Amelia, Eva and Pippa doing their best to keep adding to the score board.

When the finals were announced, the St Joseph's team had a rematch against Grammar in the play off for third and fourth. There was no sleepy start for the Saints this time and they ran away comprehensive winners.

Congratulations to the girls for the skill, effort and determination they showed throughout training and matches. A huge thank you to coach Charlotte Clayton and her assistants Indi, Max and Marlee. Thank you to Davey and Isaiah for sharing the umpiring duties throughout the day and Imojen, Judson and Kit for their support.

New Lego for Digi Tech

Junior School
Posted: Thursday 8 June 2023

Last week saw a huge delivery of Lego into the Digi Tech room. Thank you to the P&F for putting money towards this purchase. Your kind gesture has made a significant impact on our students and brought immense joy and excitement. The Lego sets will undoubtedly enhance our students' learning experiences in Digi Tech. They will offer a unique blend of entertainment and educational value, encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among our young learners. The ability to build, design, and explore with Lego fosters a hands-on approach to learning, making complex concepts more tangible and engaging. On behalf of the entire school community, I want to express our sincerest appreciation for your support. Your contribution will not only enrich the lives of our current students but also those of the future.
