Term 3 - Week 7

Week Seven!

Principal
Posted: Friday 30 August 2024

Fantastic to see our dads and grandads at our annual Father's Day Breakfast. Thank you to the Junior School and College Prefects for organising the event. Many happy returns and blessings to all the dads in our community.

Our Year 12s have mixed emotions about the final weeks of Term 3. The SS Athletics Carnival was first of many "lasts" for our students and we wish them good health, high spirits and strength for the remainder of the term before Mock exams in second week of school holidays.

Speaking of school holidays, some things to organise/put on the fridge calendar for Term 4:

  1. Term 4 uniform changes. Summer uniform for all students but we will also transitioning to optional College navy shorts and navy socks for the FEMALE uniform Year 1-11. We will also have new soft-shell jackets to replace the rain jackets. Contact Mrs Anderson in the Uniform Shop if you have any questions.
  2. Secondary School Presentation Night - Wednesday 23 October.
  3. Junior School Presentation Night/Christmas Concert - Wednesday 4 December.
  4. Albany Show Day (pupil free day) 8 November
  5. Year 11 exams start Monday 11 November

Junior school parents are kindly reminded of the procedure for picking students up during school hours:

  1. Parent comes to office to sign child out and collect red slip (students will not be released without a red slip)
  2. Parent then can go to classroom and collect child themselves
  3. On return, the parent drops student back at office to be signed back in

All parents are to note that phone messages to be given to students are to be received no later than 2pm. Administration is unable to forward messages after this time.

Roll on Week 8.

Get ready to enter a world of “Pure Imagination”

Join ALOTCO as we present a mesmerising production of this much loved story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. An amazing chance for theatre goers of ALL AGES to join this incredible production, an experience not to be missed!

Based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including "Candy Man", "I've Got a Golden Ticket", "Oompa Loompa Song" and "Pure Imagination".

The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory... but only to a lucky few. Charlie Bucket, an imaginative boy with a knack for making something out of nothing, dreams of acquiring a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka's over-the-top chocolate factory and can't believe his luck when it actually happens. Fellow contest winners: the gluttonous German, Augustus Gloop; Daddy's spoiled rotten princess, Veruca Salt; chewing gum celebrity, Violet Beauregarde; and over-amped computer hacker, Mike Teevee, have no idea what they're getting themselves into as they each learn lessons about selfishness and greed from Wonka who is not only out of his mind but potentially dangerous. With Wonka's world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka's army of curious Oompa Loompas. You'll devour this family friendly adventure that's full of mouth-watering visuals that "Must be Believed to be Seen".

Vinnies Winter Appeal 2024

Posted: Thursday 27 June 2024

Vinnies WA has launched its annual Winter Appeal for 2024!

The theme of this year's Winter Appeal shines a spotlight on the spiralling cost of living which is forcing 1,600 australians onto the streets every single month.

Each year Vinnies assists more than 61,000 Western Australians by providing vital support such as food, furniture, clothing and assistance with bills and rent and delivers a range of specialised services and programs in the areas of homelessness, housing, mental health, youth services, and financial counselling.

As part of our Catholic commitment to respect the human dignity of all, St Joseph's College works to assist those less fortunate in our community through our annual winter food drive. Collection boxes will be in each classroom and homeroom for any non-perishable food items that you wish to donate. This year we will also be collecting blankets and warm clothing (jumpers, trackies, beanies, scarves) that are clean and in new or good condition - these can be dropped in at either Library.

On behalf of the College, I would like to thank you all for your generosity and commitment each and every year to those doing it tough in our community.

Intergenerational Visit to Clarence Estate

Junior School
Posted: Friday 30 August 2024

On Tuesday the first group of 12 Pre-Primary students walked to Clarence Estate to take part in the Intergenerational Program developed between St Joseph's College and Clarence Estate. The students were treated to a Teddy Bear's Picnic with colouring, snacks, singing and dancing. The students did a fabulous job of interacting with the elderly, introducing themselves and asking questions (mostly, how old are you?). Each student received a very special teddy bear, made by one of the Clarence Estate clients. Each Pre-Primary student will visit Clarence Estate over the next couple of months with painting, puppet making, and science experiments planned for future visits.

Swim Instructing

Austswim are hosting a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course at ALAC on 12th & 13th October. This course is the pre-requisite to becoming a swim instructor. Enrolments for the course are through the Austswim website.

Students need to be 16yo to attend the course and then 17yo to be employed by us at The City of Albany. Swim teaching is a fantastic job for this age group as they can take these skills with them Australia wide as long as they maintain their registration. As a guide, the City of Albany pay approximately $37 per hour for our swim instructors – so a shift of 3 hours, can raise $100 in the hand which is pretty fantastic. One shift a week can easily fit in to a busy year 12 schedule.

Many children will have a positive experience starting school or moving from primary to high school and despite some initial nervousness, most will settle in very quickly. However, we know some parents/carers may be very concerned about the upcoming changes e.g. buying uniforms, books or devices and that's where we can help.

What is Saver Plus: Saver Plus is a free online money skills program for people on lower incomes and matched savings program. It’s about strengthening financial skills, to build and develop (and keep) good savings habits.

Saver Plus encourages parents to save $50 a month (for 10 months). Savings are then matched - a free $500 for education costs.
