Term 3 - Week 8

Week Seven!

Principal
Posted: Friday 30 August 2024

Fantastic to see our dads and grandads at our annual Father's Day Breakfast. Thank you to the Junior School and College Prefects for organising the event. Many happy returns and blessings to all the dads in our community.

Our Year 12s have mixed emotions about the final weeks of Term 3. The SS Athletics Carnival was first of many "lasts" for our students and we wish them good health, high spirits and strength for the remainder of the term before Mock exams in second week of school holidays.

Speaking of school holidays, some things to organise/put on the fridge calendar for Term 4:

  1. Term 4 uniform changes. Summer uniform for all students but we will also transitioning to optional College navy shorts and navy socks for the FEMALE uniform Year 1-11. We will also have new soft-shell jackets to replace the rain jackets. Contact Mrs Anderson in the Uniform Shop if you have any questions.
  2. Secondary School Presentation Night - Wednesday 23 October.
  3. Junior School Presentation Night/Christmas Concert - Wednesday 4 December.
  4. Albany Show Day (pupil free day) 8 November
  5. Year 11 exams start Monday 11 November

Junior school parents are kindly reminded of the procedure for picking students up during school hours:

  1. Parent comes to office to sign child out and collect red slip (students will not be released without a red slip)
  2. Parent then can go to classroom and collect child themselves
  3. On return, the parent drops student back at office to be signed back in

All parents are to note that phone messages to be given to students are to be received no later than 2pm. Administration is unable to forward messages after this time.

Roll on Week 8.

Book Week Parade

Whole School
Posted: Wednesday 4 September 2024

The year's theme - Reading is Magic - certainly inspired the staff and students to get into the spirit for this Year's Book Week.

Of course, the highlight of Book Week was the Book Week Parade which took place in the College Gym. Year groups took turns parading around the gym to music. Many of them enjoyed getting into the character of their costume.

This is a whole College event with all students and staff getting involved. There was a huge turnout of costumes - many of which were creatively homemade.

Needless to say, the judges were under the pump and struggled to choose a winner for each year group.

The criteria being: a character from a book, effort into making or putting together the costume, originality, and acting the part of the character in the parade. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you everyone who took part.

In the lead up to Book Week, we had the Book Week Door Decorating Competition. Students and staff collaborate and show off their artistic talents by decorating their class/home room door for book week. The amazingly decorated doors encouraged literacy engagement, creativity, teamwork, and a passion for reading.

The decorated doors this year all looked AMAZING! Congratulations to the winning rooms.

Thank you to the staff and students who helped make this year’s event a huge success!

Yr 6 Girls Dockers Cup

Whole School
Posted: Tuesday 3 September 2024

Saint Joseph's Year 6 girls emerged victorious in the Dockers Cup, showcasing their prowess against tough competition. The competition was filled with 9 schools from the great southern region and the team played against Yakamia, Mount Barker, and Denmark, winning all their games to secure a spot in the Grand Final.

Facing Great Southern Grammar in the final, St Jo's took advantage of the breeze in the first half, scoring multiple goals. In the second half, they defended tenaciously and worked the ball with great skill against the wind, ultimately claiming the championship title.

The girls displayed remarkable resilience, playing through strong winds, rain, and the occasional bit of sunshine. A special thanks to Mrs. Wright for her assistance throughout the competition.

Yr 7 8 Soccer and Hockey Carnival

Whole School
Posted: Monday 2 September 2024

Saint Joseph’s Year 7 and 8 students showcased their talent and teamwork at the recent soccer and hockey carnival held at North Road. Despite tough, windy conditions, all teams competed with determination and spirit.

The A Girls and Boys soccer teams were the standout performers, both taking out the champion spot after winning their respective matches against Denmark. Their victories were a testament to their skill and resilience on the field.

A special thank you goes to our senior school students who came down to umpire and coach on the day. Their support and guidance played a crucial role in the teams’ success.

The carnival was a fantastic display of sportsmanship and school pride, with Saint Joseph’s students once again demonstrating their ability to excel in challenging conditions.

Albany DSF Literacy Clinic Closure

Posted: Wednesday 4 September 2024

The DSF literacy clinic in Albany has been operating for nearly ten years providing specialist tuition, psychological assessments, advice and advocacy for families of children with learning difficulties, as well as resources and professional training for teachers and psychologists.

During this time, we have been able to help hundreds of families deal with the struggles of a learning difficulty and improve the level of educational and clinical services provided to the community. In turn, we have developed strong relationships with local schools and have received tremendous support from our families and community stakeholders.

It is therefore with regret that I inform you of the closing of the Albany DSF literacy clinic at the end of the current school year. The clinic will close its doors on Thursday, December 12th, 2024. Please be assured that this is not a decision that has been made lightly or without lengthy consideration. We have worked incredibly hard for a significant amount of time to find an alternative solution.

On behalf of DSF and all our employees, I would like to thank the parents, caregivers, students, teachers, and health professionals who have supported us and allowed us to provide such a vital service to the region. Although we are saddened to be closing, we are proud of what we have achieved and the level of service we have been able to offer.

If you have any questions regarding the clinic closure, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will continue to serve the community until we close.

Thank you, once again, to all those who have supported us. It has been a joy to work at the clinic and my personal pleasure to meet all of you.

Sincerely,

Mark Jones

Swim Instructing

Posted: Wednesday 28 August 2024

Austswim are hosting a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course at ALAC on 12th & 13th October. This course is the pre-requisite to becoming a swim instructor. Enrolments for the course are through the Austswim website.

Students need to be 16yo to attend the course and then 17yo to be employed by us at The City of Albany. Swim teaching is a fantastic job for this age group as they can take these skills with them Australia wide as long as they maintain their registration. As a guide, the City of Albany pay approximately $37 per hour for our swim instructors – so a shift of 3 hours, can raise $100 in the hand which is pretty fantastic. One shift a week can easily fit in to a busy year 12 schedule.
