The Year 9-10 boys and girls AFL Football teams contested the Inter-School carnival recently at the Eastern Precinct grounds. The boys team set out to follow the exploits of the Year 7-8 boys team which recently won their carnival but faced some challenging matches finishing a creditable third on the day.
The girls team combined with some students from NASHS after a number of girls withdrew from the side. The St Josephs players had trained regularly and were full of enthusiasm for the event and had a great carnival day also finishing third overall.
Thank you to Judson Lowson and Isaiah McLeod for their efforts umpiring on and to Mr Ruck and Imojen Gill for coaching the boys' and girls' teams respectively for the carnival. Thanks to Mrs Bennion who supported the girl's team on the day.

The much-anticipated Year 5-6 Great Southern Netball Carnival took place last Friday, bringing together young athletes from across the region for a display of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The carnival, held at the Katanning Leisure Centre, was a celebration of the power of youth sports and the enthusiasm these young players bring to the court.
The carnival, organized by the Great Southern Netball Association, saw participation from over 20 schools in the surrounding area. Teams competed in a round-robin format, each showcasing their abilities in a series of exciting matches. The event aimed not only to provide an opportunity for friendly competition but also to foster camaraderie among the young netball enthusiasts.
After braving the early morning start to get to Katanning on time, both teams started with two strong wins to get the ball rolling. In the absence of Netball guru Mrs Hines - Miss Della Bosca stepped up this year to lead to the Year 6's girls, while the 5's were led strongly by Year 10 CERT II Sport Coaching student Charlotte C. Both teams worked hard all day with our Year 5 girls finishing third and narrowly missing out on the grand final.
After losing the grand final last year, the Year 6's found themselves with a chance at redemption, playing Mount Lockyer in the grand final. After a big rev up from Super Coach Della Bosca the girls came out firing in the first half finishing with a score of 8-1. The girls continued their momentum in the second half finishing the game with the final score 14-6.
The College is very proud of how all student conducted themselves on the court and was very happy to bring home the winning shield for the first time in several years.
Well done to all those students who were involved and thank you to the teachers and students who supported on the day by either umpiring, coaching or managing.

Vinnies WA has launched its annual Winter Appeal for 2023!
The theme of this year's Winter Appeal is 'What if your mum, grandma, aunt or sister became homeless?', shining a spotlight on women as one of the fastest-growing groups of people at risk of and experiencing homelessness across Australia.
Each year Vinnies assists more than 61,000 Western Australians by providing vital support such as food, furniture, clothing and assistance with bills and rent and delivers a range of specialised services and programs in the areas of homelessness, housing, mental health, youth services, and financial counselling.
As part of our Catholic commitment to respect the human dignity of all, St Joseph's College works to assist those less fortunate in our community through our annual winter food drive. Collection boxes will be in each classroom and homeroom for any non-perishable food items that you wish to donate. If you would like to donate blankets, jumpers and furniture please drop them off at the Vinnies depot in town. For more information, please visit https://donate.vinnies.org.au/appeals-wa/winter-appeal-wa.
On behalf of the College, I would like to thank you all for your generosity and commitment each and every year to those doing it tough in our community.

The Year One students have been travelling back in time to investigate technology and toys from the past. They have discovered how cameras, phones and typing devices have changed over the generations. Thank you to all family members who have assisted students in learning more about the ‘good old days’.
The Certificate II Construction Pathways students had a morning off-campus on Tuesday the 8th to construct a partition within an existing shed. By strange coincidence, it happened to be my shed. To my mind, it gave the students valuable experience in a real-world situation. Some students, however, may not have seen it that way and the term “slave labour” was muttered more than once.
All jokes aside, the students followed the safety procedures well and constructed a stud wall from lengths of pine using various power tools such as a mitre saw and nail gun. The result was a square and structurally sound wall which will be clad in due course. I commend the students for their effort.
Mr Severin
In a thrilling display of talent, determination, and teamwork, St Jo's College emerged victorious in the Yr 5/6 Dockers School Girl Cup, delivering an awe-inspiring performance to go undefeated throughout the day. The day began with the Year 5 and 6 girls versing Mount Lockyer to which the girls found their groove early. Abi M started strong scoring 4 goals in the first game alone. As the day progressed, St Jo's College continued to dazzle the crowd with their relentless energy and skillful play.
The girls knocked off Flinders, Albany Primary, Mount Barker and Spencer Park to make it into the grand final for a rematch with Spencer Park. The grand final was a battle of skill, determination, and nerves. Both teams came into half time scoring a goal a piece. Spencer Park took the lead early in the second half with an impressive goal. The girls then continued to fight, levelling the game with only minutes left to play. With the seconds ticking down the girls got a late clearance into our forward line, where little pocket rocket Neve O popped up with the ball and snapped the goal right on the siren to win us the grand final!!!
The College is very proud of how all the girls conducted themselves with sportsmanship and respect and competed hard all day!

On Tuesday August 9 the students from Kindy Gold visited the Holy Family Church with Father Joel and Mrs Palfrey. We looked at all the statues of Jesus, Mary and St Joseph. We learnt about genuflecting and bowing at the alter. Father Joel also showed us the bread used for Communion and all the different robes the priests wear.
On Wednesday 2nd August the Pre-Primary students ventured into town to explore the important buildings of Albany as part of their HASS learning for Term 3. The wet and windy weather couldn't wipe the smiles off their faces as they visited the Town Library, Post Office, Police Station, and Hooked on Middleton Beach for lunch. As they walked down York Street, they learnt about several other important buildings such as the Town Hall and Church. A very big special THANK YOU to our wonderful parent helpers, Dora at the Library, the Post Office staff (who handed each Pre-Primary their own stamp), Police Officers Arthur Dollas and Michal Krizanek (who turned the lights and sirens on especially for us!!!), and the staff at Hooked. It was a very memorable first excursion for the Pre-Primary students!
The first of the two Reconciliation meetings is to be held next Tuesday, August 8, 2023. The meeting will be held at Holy Family Church and will commence at 6.00pm. The meeting is not expected to last any longer than an hour.
If you are unable to attend the meeting please let myself or Fr Vince on 9841 1129, know. Thanking you.

A wop bop a lu mop a wop bam boom! ‘Grease is the Word’ for ALOTCo in 2023!
If you've loved Grease since you first saw it on the big screen or fell in love with one of the stage revivals ... Throw your mittens around your kittens and away we go ….
It's 1959 and Rydell High Seniors are in fine form - the too-cool-for-school Pink Ladies and T-Birds rule.
At times crass, tough, vulnerable, lusty, and romantic, Grease the musical follows ten working class teens as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, personal values and love. It's not all about Sandy and Danny. The focus of this production will be developing a strong ensemble performance that takes the audience back to gritty roots of Grease before the highly polished, but beloved film version.
Adult themes.
