Year 10 Sport Coaching students had a unique practical experience at Albany Lawn Bowls Club. Guided by local community coaches, students learned the fundamentals of lawn bowls, gaining hands-on experience in a sport different from their usual repertoire. The session provided valuable insights into the techniques and strategies of lawn bowls and a different style of coaching to what the students are used to. This practical opportunity reinforced the importance of community involvement and broadened their understanding of different community sport played in Albany.

The seventy-strong Junior School Choir headed to the Entertainment Centre on Thursday morning for a full day of rehearsals for the Great Southern Primary Schools’ Music Festival. For many students, this was their first glimpse of how things work backstage in a professional theatre and the excitement levels were high.
In between rehearsing their songs on stage, the choir was able to watch other schools perform. The weather was kind to us and we were able to eat lunch and play in ANZAC Park during our break.
A special thanks to Mrs Meyer and Mrs Veerappan who were on hand all day to assist Mrs Findlay and the choir in a myriad of ways. By the end of the day everyone was tired but excited about the evening performance ahead. Photos and a review of the choir’s performance are to come.
The Holy Family Parish warmly invites you to the third talk of its Faith Formation Series this Sunday!

All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you there!
Topic: Humble of Heart: The Sacrament of Penance

Where: Holy Family Church
Speaker: Mr Luke Bogoni (Religious Education Coordinator at SJC) and Fr Joel Villanueva OSJ (Assistant Priest at HFC)
Students departed the College on Father's Day for the annual ACC Athletics Carnival in Perth. With a packed bus and some yummy treats (thanks to the J/S parents), we made our way up the highway to our 5-star digs at the Trinity College gymnasium. There were some questionable song choices and usual banter before we arrived and set about preparing for the carnival. A stretching session and relay practice followed by dinner and dessert, some quiet activites and off to bed.
We awoke to beautiful conditions and made our way to breakfast at the Trinity Pavilion overlooking the majestic Swan River. A beautiful way to start the week before departing to the Athletics stadium for the days events.
It was ‘Go’ time and we started the 200 metre races with some minor placings before the big guns in Ella, Valentino and Hervic got us on the board. Special mention to Pippa in year 8 who came from another postcode to snatch third. Kenneth’s javelin just missed the morning flight to Rottnest in the field events, before Josh stamped himself as a medal contender with a narrow 2nd in the year 8 high jump. It was rinse and repeat in the 100m’s with some minor placings before Ella, Valentino and Hervic repeated the dose.
While we managed some great results throughout the day the highlights included Abigail in year 7 putting her hand up on numerous occasions throughout the day to compete in events when her peers couldn’t through various reasons (showing great team spirit) and the year nine 4 x 100m relay. Taylor’s 3rd leg was phenomenal, demonstrated by the grin on Ella’s face as she realised she was 10m in front entering the straight. It was daylight second as she put on the gas. Well done, Girls! The senior schoolgirls also deserve a special mention after some late withdrawals threatened to derail our campaign. Thanks for all of your efforts putting your hands up to come up and competing hard throughout the day!
We managed to compete in every event on the card except one, a great effort by all and although we didn’t get the bragging rights over Mr Norris’s new school Mother Teresa (with over 1400 students) we enjoyed a sensational day with all students representing the College with great pride.
Thanks to Mr O for organising and Mrs T for supporting the team.
On Thursday the 5th of September, St Joseph's College hosted the Great Southern VET Cluster meeting, welcoming VET Co-ordinators and Industry participants from all parts of the Great Southern to discuss all things Vocational Education. With so many pathways for students in 2024 it was a great opportunity to network and ensure students receive the necessary information and Career guidance they require when selecting subjects and courses. The College has a great relationship with Southern Regional TAFE through the VETdSS and Career Taster Programs (CTP) and all Middle School students/parents are encouraged to check out their website for course information.
VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETdSS) | South Regional TAFE
Thanks to Christine H, Sue and Kirsty for all of their assistance
Eight Students attended the Great Southern Chess Competition in Mt Barker on Friday the 6th of September for the first time, providing a great opportunity for students to hone their moves in competitive conditions. After seven rounds two students, Hua and Josh, managed five wins and two losses, with four other students winning four matches. Unfortunately, we couldn’t ‘check mate’ enough kings to take home the team competition, but with only one year twelve student redemption will be a possibility in 2025. Well done to all team members for their efforts!
Well done to Mr Callaghan for preparing the team and we look forward to next years competition.
Middle School students attended the annual year 7/8 muti sports carnival on Tuesday the 27th of August at the North Road sporting precinct. Despite the conditions that could only be described as ‘good for ducks’, students participated with enthusiasm and effort as the College came away with some creditable results.
Firstly, our hockey side, with many inexperienced players, competed hard and finished with some exciting play.
Our two development soccer sides (Male and Female) maintained a high morale with some impressive efforts, despite fielding many younger students.
Finally, our top-seeded soccer teams showed all of the hard work the St Joseph’s Soccer Club has been putting in over the past few seasons as we won both divisions quite convincingly. Mason kept a clean sheet all day, While Andre’s free kick from range was adjudged the strike of the day. Stella was everywhere for the Girls and Ziv's ‘spider-woman’ heroics put the polish on a St Joseph’s clinic. Mr Bogoni has called for the introduction of a Soccer Academy at the College in 2025 after such a dominant display so watch this space.
Thanks to Mrs Ferrell, Mr Mola and Mr Picard for all of their assistance on the day, as well as the Sport and Rec students for Coaching / Umpiring. Also thanks to Guy Lembo for all of his efforts in organising new soccer goals for the College and the support from the PnF. Watch out Matildas and Socceroos, we may have some future stars on the horizon.
Join ALOTCO as we present a mesmerising production of this much loved story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. An amazing chance for theatre goers of ALL AGES to join this incredible production, an experience not to be missed!
Based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including "Candy Man", "I've Got a Golden Ticket", "Oompa Loompa Song" and "Pure Imagination".
The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory... but only to a lucky few. Charlie Bucket, an imaginative boy with a knack for making something out of nothing, dreams of acquiring a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka's over-the-top chocolate factory and can't believe his luck when it actually happens. Fellow contest winners: the gluttonous German, Augustus Gloop; Daddy's spoiled rotten princess, Veruca Salt; chewing gum celebrity, Violet Beauregarde; and over-amped computer hacker, Mike Teevee, have no idea what they're getting themselves into as they each learn lessons about selfishness and greed from Wonka who is not only out of his mind but potentially dangerous. With Wonka's world of pure imagination including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka's army of curious Oompa Loompas. You'll devour this family friendly adventure that's full of mouth-watering visuals that "Must be Believed to be Seen".

St Joseph's College is proud to be a multidiverse community with staff, students and families whom come from different countries, speak different languages and practise different religions.
The data above was collated by the College to celebrate the recent Multicultural Day and shows off the richness that we have here in our community which we hope continues to grow in the years to come.
Year Nine students attended 'Tradie for a day' at SRTAFE on Thursday the 12th of September as part of the year Nine Career Taster Program which is designed to give students a look into possible career pathways through engaging activities within the Vocational Education space. Students enjoyed many different activities throughout the day including carpentry and joinery, metalwork and plumbing. The authentic 'Tradie' experience (complete with Personal Protection Equipment) was typified by the morning smoko of a choc milk and homemade sausage roll. Thanks to Mr Honter for assisting students and SRTAFE for hosting the day.
On Monday 26 August the Year 7-12 students gathered on the oval for the annual Inter-House athletics carnival. The students battled it out for individual and team glory as well as ACC team selections in a variety of traditional athletic events and fun-based novelty events. The standard of competition was very high with numerous College athletics records being broken. Equally important, the participation from all students present was excellent, in particular the Year 12 students who lead by example with great commitment and a positive attitude towards the day.

Thank you to the Year One staff for your tireless efforts in preparing the students. A special congratulations to Year One student Zach, who was the first of many Friendship Ninjas to be recognised in the Junior School. It is wonderful to see our URStrong learning in action!
Today the second group of Pre-Primary students walked to Clarence Estate to participate in some painting with the elderly clients. After enjoying some afternoon tea, each student carefully painted their new friend, with some clients joining in the painting too! There were lots of smiles, laughs, and talking, and all ages thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. Check out our painting talents!
The end of term is proving to be a busy place in the Junior School with many events occurring in the last few weeks. The Year 5 Assembly today saw the Year 5 cohort re-enact the Eureka Stockade with an entertaining play and song. Thank you to the students and Mr Collins, Mrs Tuffley, Mrs Meyer, Mrs House, Mrs Veerappan and Mrs Hassell who assisted with some props. Many Students also received well-earned certificates.

Headspace Albany proudly invites you to the 10th Anniversary of the Mad Hatter Tea Party community event on Friday 4th October from 10am – 1pm at the Albany Town Square. For 10 years, headspace Albany has collaborated with local mental health support services to hold a Tea Party to kick off Mental Health Week and have promoted these mental health services to the Great Southern community. The DSF literacy clinic in Albany has been operating for nearly ten years providing specialist tuition, psychological assessments, advice and advocacy for families of children with learning difficulties, as well as resources and professional training for teachers and psychologists.
During this time, we have been able to help hundreds of families deal with the struggles of a learning difficulty and improve the level of educational and clinical services provided to the community. In turn, we have developed strong relationships with local schools and have received tremendous support from our families and community stakeholders.
It is therefore with regret that I inform you of the closing of the Albany DSF literacy clinic at the end of the current school year. The clinic will close its doors on Thursday, December 12th, 2024. Please be assured that this is not a decision that has been made lightly or without lengthy consideration. We have worked incredibly hard for a significant amount of time to find an alternative solution.
On behalf of DSF and all our employees, I would like to thank the parents, caregivers, students, teachers, and health professionals who have supported us and allowed us to provide such a vital service to the region. Although we are saddened to be closing, we are proud of what we have achieved and the level of service we have been able to offer.
If you have any questions regarding the clinic closure, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We will continue to serve the community until we close.
Thank you, once again, to all those who have supported us. It has been a joy to work at the clinic and my personal pleasure to meet all of you.
Sincerely,
Mark Jones

Austswim are hosting a Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course at ALAC on 12th & 13th October. This course is the pre-requisite to becoming a swim instructor. Enrolments for the course are through the Austswim website.
Students need to be 16yo to attend the course and then 17yo to be employed by us at The City of Albany. Swim teaching is a fantastic job for this age group as they can take these skills with them Australia wide as long as they maintain their registration. As a guide, the City of Albany pay approximately $37 per hour for our swim instructors – so a shift of 3 hours, can raise $100 in the hand which is pretty fantastic. One shift a week can easily fit in to a busy year 12 schedule.
Spencer Park Dental Therapy Centre offers free dental examinations, oral care advice, preventative, restorative and emergency treatment for children from pre-primary to Year 11.
Enrolment forms have been issued to your child if they have recently changed schools or enrolled in Pre-Primary, please return the forms to your school by Friday 13th September if you wish to use our service.
Parents of enrolled students are reminded to contact the centre to update your details if you have moved in the last few years. All appointments are posted home, many are returned to us, this means that your child misses out on their dental visit. If you no longer intend to use our service and attend a private dental clinic, please let us know as soon as possible as your valuable appointment could be taken up by someone else.
You can call us on 9841 3967 or send us an email to spencerparkdtc@health.wa.gov.au.
We look forward to seeing you in the clinic soon.
